We now have added "Informational Posts" which are tidbits of information that may come in handy at some point.

Because so many folks cite different authorities, lets see how many are citing each other, or some other authority and validate that authority. Now the CDC authority is a recent authority based on a recent study. Note the Finklehor authority (last 2 shown below) based on a 1990/1994 studies. Is either wrong CDC/Finklehor?

One thing that does confuse folks is, when the CDC is cited folks DO NOT always cite the SPECIFIC page of the CDC which shows the Table (see "beyond the surface"). That Table is the best cite/link and should be used.

Tricky is this: one in four girls, is an approximate number. Look at the CDC Table it shows 24.7% of 9,367 women. 24.7% is approximately 1/4 of the number of women, not an exact number. Secondly it says "women" but means children, see title "Prevalence of Individual Adverse Childhood Experiences" best guess is women were polled as adults about their childhood experiences. Thirdly, as to boys, all these weird facts applies to their stat as well.

Finally, some of the following Sources also cite other statistics and authorities which we can use, and which I have not mention below. Enjoy hunting for them.

Q: How many children are sexually abused?

A: Approximately one in four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused before the age of eighteen, an overall estimate of one in five children. Many experts believe these figures are underestimated because many cases go unreported and will never be disclosed by the victim.[1]

One in four girls (24.7%) and one in six boys (16%) are victims of sexual abuse before their 18th birthdays, Norris said, citing a study conducted by Kaiser Permanente and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Note: Kaiser Permanente partnered with CDC on one major study. Click on Kaiser Permanente and read the opening paragraph.

Who Are the Victims?

Anyone can be a victim of sexual assault, but women and girls are especially at risk. Females are more than six times as likely as males to be victims of sexual assault[9]. Children are particularly vulnerable. Approximately 67% of all victims of reported sexual assaults are under the age of 18, and more than half of these victims are under the age of 12[10]. Approximately one in four girls and one in seven boys are sexually assaulted before the age of 18[11].
